Production Estimator
Job Description:
About the Role
We are looking for a proactive and detail-oriented Production Estimator to join our growing team. This role is responsible for preparing accurate and commercially sound cost estimates for structural steel fabrication and construction projects while coordinating closely with drafting, procurement, production, and project teams.
The role is approximately 60% estimating and 40% coordination/project support, including drafting exposure. We're looking for someone with strong estimating fundamentals who is naturally curious, confident in asking questions, raising concerns, and seeking clarification to ensure accurate project pricing. While experience in modular construction is advantageous, it is not essential, as training will be provided. Likewise, Australian estimating experience is preferred but not required, and candidates with international estimating experience are encouraged to apply.
Key Responsibilities
Estimating (60%)
- Prepare accurate cost estimates, BOQs, and quantity take-offs from structural, fabrication, architectural, and engineering drawings.
- Interpret fabrication drawings, shop drawings, and project documentation to develop commercially competitive estimates.
- Review project documentation to identify scope gaps, risks, and pricing considerations.
- Prepare and submit tender estimates within required timeframes.
- Obtain, review, and evaluate supplier and subcontractor quotations.
- Maintain pricing databases, estimating documentation, and cost records.
- Monitor estimate accuracy and support continuous improvement of estimating processes.
Coordination & Project Support (40%)
- Coordinate with drafting, procurement, engineering, production, and project teams throughout the estimating process.
- Liaise with internal stakeholders to ensure project requirements are clearly understood before pricing.
- Proactively ask questions, raise concerns, and clarify technical information to minimise commercial and construction risks.
- Support project handovers by ensuring estimates, documentation, and scope are accurately communicated to production teams.
- Assist with project variations, technical clarifications, and estimating support as required.
About You
We're looking for someone who has:
- Minimum 5 years of estimating experience within structural steel, fabrication, manufacturing, construction, or related industries.
- Strong knowledge of BOQs, quantity take-offs, and cost estimating.
- Experience interpreting structural, fabrication, and engineering drawings.
- Exposure to drafting or working closely with drafting teams.
- Strong Microsoft Excel skills.
- Experience using AutoCAD and Bluebeam (preferred).
- Excellent communication and stakeholder coordination skills.
- The ability to manage multiple tenders and deadlines simultaneously.
Nice to Have
- Experience working on structural steel fabrication projects.
- Exposure to modular or prefabricated construction (training provided if not).
- Experience with CostX or similar estimating software.
- International estimating experience (Australian experience is advantageous but not required).
What We're Looking For
The successful candidate will be:
- Proactive and naturally curious.
- Comfortable asking questions and seeking clarification before making assumptions.
- Able to identify potential risks and commercial considerations early in the estimating process.
- Self-motivated and capable of working independently.
- Detail-oriented with a strong focus on accuracy.
- Collaborative and confident working with cross-functional teams.
- Adaptable and eager to learn new systems, products, and estimating processes.
